Studies find that aquarium watching may lower blood pressure in seniors, reduce the need for pain medication in the dentist’s chair and curb anxiety in psychiatric patients. It’s no coincidence that doctors’ offices often have aquariums in waiting rooms, says Charles Mathias, Ph.D., of the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio. “The organic motion of fish swimming is far more calming than digital and man-made stimuli,” he says.
