“Disciplined cat” might sound like an oxymoron, but believe it or not, you can train feline friends to nix naughty habits. “Cats will respond to positive reinforcement, not negative. To change their behavior, offer them alternatives in a playful way,” says Marva Marrow, a cat behavior consultant certified by the international association of animal Behavior Consultants. Start by reserving treats for training purposes only. When your cat does something you don’t want her to do—such as jumping on the kitchen counter, fighting with another cat or chomping on one of your plants— draw her attention across the room with a toy, then give her a treat.
