The Best Food for Your Cat
Q: What should I look for in cat food?
“You want to see one or more meats, such as lamb or poultry, as the primary source of protein,” says Jean Hofve, D.V.M., author of The Complete Guide to Holistic Cat Care: An Illustrated Handbook (Quarry Books). Hofve recommends canned food, as it contains more water than dry food (unlike dogs, cats are designed to get most of their water from the moisture content of their prey). If cats don’t get enough moisture through their food, dehydration—a factor in the development of kidney disease in older cats—can result.
