Down the Tube
Before buying your next tube of moisturizer, sunscreen, or face wash, check the recycling symbol on the back. The little number inside the arrows tells you how easy it is to recycle.

Most hard
plastics such as water bottles (labeled
No. 1 or No. 2) are easy-but the
squeezable, soft ones (made with "low density
polyethylene" and labeled No. 3
or No. 4) are not, says Lin King, program
manager of the R4 recycling program
at the University of California, Davis.
Look for eco-conscious companies
that use recycled plastic (Aveda), No. 2
plastic (Pangea), or aluminum (Dr.
Hauschka and Weleda).
