For severe symptoms, you may need to complement natural treatments with one of these options.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (ssrIs) increase brain levels of the calming neurotransmitter serotonin. they include Lexapro (escitalopram), Prozac (fluoxetine) and Zoloft (sertraline).
Tricyclic antidepressants (Tcas) such as Tofranil (imipramine) are prescribed for panic disorder and GAD, but may cause more side effects than ssrIs.
Benzodiazepines such as Ativan (lorazepam) and Xanax (alprazolam) slow the nervous system. They’re best used short-term, since they can be habit-forming.
Buspirone (Buspar, Vanspar) affects serotonin, dopamine and possibly other neurotransmitters in the brain. It works more slowly than benzodiazepines, but is less likely to cause side effects.
