Kraft Goes Hormone Free

In response to public demand for dairy products free of recombinant bovine somatotropin or rbST (also called recombinant bovine growth hormone, or rbGH), a compound that increases milk production, Kraft has introduced hormone-free cheeses. The FDA says rbST-treated milk is safe, but public interest groups worry the hormone makes cows more susceptible to infection—and thus more likely to be given antibiotics. Kraft is greening its salad dressings, too, removing artificial preservatives and packaging with 19 percent less plastic, saving 3.4 million pounds of plastic a year. And since more of the bottles can fit into a truck, shipping is 18 percent more efficient.
