Teeccino Maya Chai

By Mary Georger, editorial intern
I love coffee, and I drink it black and strong so I can relish its robust flavor. But I have to limit myself to just one cup in the morning—otherwise, the caffeine makes me both jittery and groggy. Then I discovered Teeccino’s Maya Chai Herbal Coffee ($7.60 for an 11 oz. bag, at Whole Foods Markets), a caffeine-free alternative that tastes like the real thing (believe me, I was skeptical). The certified organic beverage—which you brew in a coffee pot just like regular java—is made with roasted ground barley, ramon nuts, and chicory, plus organic cinnamon and ginger. In addition to the taste, I was impressed with the drink’s nutritional benefits: Each cup offers 40 mg of potassium, a mineral that lowers blood pressure and restores healthy electrolyte activity, and 325 mg of inulin, a soluble fiber that promotes healthy digestion and protects against mineral loss. Other flavors of Teeccino include Maya Caffé, an earthy dark roast, and Maya Chocolaté, a blend of cocoa beans and zesty chilies. Now, I can drink to my health more than once a day!
