Replace your store-bought chemical carpet freshener with this home recipe, courtesy of Annie B. Bond, the executive producer of Care2's Green Living channel:

Mix two cups of borax—look for it in the laundry section of your grocery store—and 25 drops of pure essential oil, making sure the oil is evenly distributed throughout the borax. (When choosing an essential oil, test its purity by placing a drop on a piece of blotting paper. If it's 100 percent pure, there should be no residue left once it evaporates.) Shake this mixture liberally over your carpet, allow it to remain there for a few minutes, then vacuum.
