Fly Right
Tips to protect yourself from catching a cold when traveling on an airplane.
If you often catch colds after sharing the recycled air on a cramped, crowded plane, protect yourself by taking lactoferrin capsules before you hit the airport. Manufactured from whey, the supplement is molecularly identical to the lactoferrin protein that occurs naturally in the human gut. Lactoferrin offers anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and antioxidant benefits, and helps prevent viruses from entering your system. "Unlike Airborne, which is a combination of vitamins, amino acids, and herbs, lactoferrin is an organic compound that's similar to what your own body makes to fight colds," says Natural Health advisor Erika Schwartz, M.D.
Travelers can boost their immunity by taking 200 milligrams of lactoferrin twice daily, starting two days before their departure date and continuing for three days after arriving at their destination, says Schwartz. Although lactoferrin isn't known to trigger any adverse effects, researchers have not studied its effect on pregnant or nursing women. Supplements are available at health-food stores or through VitaminShoppe.com.
