This season, I'm going to toss Endangered Species Chocolate Halloween Treats into trick-or-treaters' baskets. One bag contains 24 individually wrapped squares, and one square is the perfect serving size: just enough to satisfy a chocolate craving without making you feel like a glutton. The chocolates are made with shade-grown cacao (which reduces the need for fertilizers and pesticides) from small, family-owned properties, ensuring that workers and farmers are paid fair wages and treated humanely.
Endangered Species chocolates are an office staple here at Natural Health—there's always a stash on hand for mid-afternoon munchies. They come in 22 flavors like dark chocolate with espresso beans and milk chocolate with peanut butter brittle (all available at chocolatebar.com), but my favorites are the Halloween Treats in both dark chocolate and milk chocolate varieties ($6.72/bag).
The company donates 10 percent of its profits to worthwhile causes: Chimp Haven, Inc., a nonprofit that gives lifetime care to chimpanzees that have been used for medical research, entertainment, or as pets; the Ocean Conservancy, an organization that does research, education, and advocacy work on behalf of the ocean; and the Nigerian Sponsorship, a program that provides resources and educational supplies to Nigerian villages in need.
