Avalon Organics is eliminating a potentially harmful chemical from its hair care, bath and shower gels, and soaps. By mid-2006, the entire line will be free of parabens, a class of preservatives found to mimic the action of estrogen. A 2004 study in the Journal of Applied Toxicology found traces of parabens in the breast-tumor tissue of several patients, although the study did not prove that parabens cause breast cancer. "Much of what you put on your skin is absorbed into your body, so we have adopted a precautionary principle on parabens," says Morris Shriftman, Avalon's senior vice president of marketing.
