The model sold in California generates less than 1 pound of smog-forming pollutants for every 15,000 miles--about 66 pounds less than what's produced by the average non-hybrid passenger car. Dubbed "a rolling advertisement for better technology and a cleaner environment" by Dave Hamilton, director of the Sierra Club's Global Warming and Energy Program, the $27,000 Escape Hybrid should inspire other car makers to steer affordable hybrid plans into the fast lane.
