Smudging is a traditional Native American ritual in which the smoke from burning herbs and aromatic woods is used to cleanse a person or place and create physical and mental harmony and peace. If you don't want to burn herbs in your home, you can sprinkle sage, sweetgrass, or cedar essential oils over wood chips, then wrap the chips in sheer fabric, says Jeanne Maryak, lead aesthetician at the Golden Door Spa at The Boulders in Carefree, Ariz. Tie off the tip and hang it in your shower-away from the water, but near enough so the shower's steam envelopes it and activates the aromatic oils.
