Recycle your Brita Filters

Environmentalists have long argued that filtering your tap water (to remove contaminants like chlorine and lead) is a greener option than buying bottled water. And now it’s an even more eco-friendly choice: Now, you can recycle your used Brita filters. Made out of polypropylene plastic #5, the filters once got tossed into landfills (the average family replaces them every two months). Now you can drop off your used filters at a Whole Foods Market or mail them directly to Preserve, an eco-housewares company that will turn them into products like cups, cutting boards, and toothbrushes.
