CONSCIOUS CHOICE WINNERS CONSUMER ELECTRONICS

1 CAMERA COMPANY Canon

The photography corporation is reducing energy consumption and using fewer chemicals. Why it's green: Canon items are made without chemicals like PFCs (perfluorocarbons), HFCs (hydroflurocarbons), and dichloro methane, and since 1990, Canon has collected and recycled more than 100,000 tons of waste through its copier toner cartridge return program.
Products we love: The PowerShot SD1100 IS camera (shown) has a new, energy–efficient processor. About 150 Canon products are certified by the EPA's Energy Star. (usa.canon.com)

2 SOLAR FIRM Better Energy Systems
This groundbreaking company created the Solio, a portable solar–powered charger for cell phones, iPods, and digital cameras.
Why it's green: Better Energy Systems promotes the use of renewable energy by making it easy (and affordable) to harness the power of the sun.
Products we love: The Solio (shown), when fully charged (leave it in the sun or on a windowsill), will provide you with 20 hours of digital music or charge your cell phone battery twice. If you're in a rush, an hour of sun juices a cell phone for 20 minutes or your iPod for 50. (solio.com)

3 ELECTRONICS KING Hewlett–Packard
HP is tackling the electronic waste problem. (According to the EPA, 2 million tons of electronics end up in landfills every year in the U.S.)
Why it's green: HP recycled 1 billion pounds of e–waste last year, and the company plans to double that in the next three years. Several of its eco–sensitive products have earned Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) certification from the Green Electronics Council.
Products we love: The Compaq 2710p tablet PC (shown) is EPEAT Gold and features a mercury–free, energy–efficient LED backlight. (hp.com)
