Fighting Breast Cancer
To help her sister deal with breast cancer, the author created a basket filled with cancer-fighting foods.

Ever since my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, I've been looking for ways to support her. When I saw "River of Hope" [November 2007], your article on breast cancer, I clipped the list of "Top 10 Breast Cancer Fighting Foods" and made a basket for my sister that included all ten. I did make one substitution: Instead of olive oil (which I know she has), I gave her a bottle of banana rum! Hey, there's got to be some fun to it.
I want you to know that the basket was a big success. She loved it. She thought it was so clever, and she appreciated that I got the foods in forms that were "friendly" to her: I bought a carton of premade iced green tea (she almost never drinks hot tea) and for spinach, a piece of spinach pie from a nearby restaurant.
Best of all, she's restocking the foods. She told me she's already bought another jug of green tea. And one of the foods was salmon, which she has always said she doesn't like—but I put a can of it in the basket and told her she could make salmon burgers with some bread crumbs and eggs. She tried it and liked it, and she's already stocking up on more cans.
Thanks again for the article. I hope it's done a little bit to help fortify my sister for her second lumpectomy this month.
