6. Clear congestion with salt. In India people have been using a neti pot filled with warm water and sea salt for generations to clear congested nasal passages and sinuses. During the winter season it can help deter colds and the flu. For more information, see “How do I use a neti pot?”

7. Clean with salt. Salt is a great stain remover. When entertaining at home, don’t panic if someone spills red wine on your Great Aunt Bessie’s antique tablecloth. Immediately sprinkle salt onto it and allow it to sit for 2-3 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cold water while rubbing the stained area between your fingers. Repeat as necessary.

8. Gargle with salt. Want to ward off sore throats during the cold and flu season? One of the best remedies is to gargle with ½ cup warm water and ¼ teaspoon salt. Salt is known to relieve inflammation.
