Yoga on the Road

If you begin to feel ungrounded as you move through the postures, refocus on your breath and close your eyes to take you inwards. Keep your eyes closed until you feel firmly planted within yourself. This practice is for you only: there is nothing to prove and no one to compete against. Be a seeker within your own body, exploring the edges and searching for room to lengthen and grow and enliven. Modify poses to make them easier or more advanced as necessary, always taking care to avoid injury by respecting your own boundaries for that day.

At the closing of class, see if you can disappear within your physical form, and maybe even merge with the space beyond it. The part of yourself that thinks and reasons and analyzes can be quieted after 60-90 minutes of inward focus. You may even create a sense of “dissolving” into the space around you.

Maintaining this gentle yet vigilant inner focus will foster a close listening to your physical body and bring a studious element to your yoga practice, no matter what class you’re in or where in the world you are. When practiced like this, yoga will entice you deeper inside, inviting exploration and a pioneering spirit, a captivating personal journey indeed.
