Natural Products Expo West Finds
The staff of Natural Health had a blast at this year’s Natural Products Expo West March 9-11, 2012, in Anaheim, Calif. Here, they share some of their highlights with you.
Supplemental information: It’s all about inflammation, folks! I love the problem solvers in this industry, and get inspired hearing the scientists and doctors at the supplement companies talk about their research and products. New Chapter’s Zyflamend formulas for breast and prostate health are so smart and targeted (as is the re-branding of their Perfect Morning morning sickness tonic), and Nordic Naturals—always tops in fish oil—now has a truly vegan Algae Omega (my daughter will take it). The show was also all about curcumin, which Rainbow Light offers in its Theramend COX-2 Flex (and we can’t live without their Counter Attack this season). Meanwhile, Carolyn Dean and Ashley Koff have their own personal campaign to get us (women) to balance our calcium intake with magnesium—a 1 to 1 ratio for strong, not-brittle bones (thanks for the Natural Calm, ladies…!).
Other highlights: An hour (and a hug) with Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., who shared his research regarding treating autistic kids with NAET (amazing!), and discovering my new favorite snack: Crunchies!

This year’s Natural Products Expo was awesome. The passion these companies have for their products just makes you want to try everything! I received so many samples, I’m still working my way through them—but one product in particular won my undying love and devotion: JR Watkins’ Foot Repair Salve (jrwatkins.com). After spending a full day on my feet, walking the Anaheim convention center, my dogs weren’t just barking, they were howling—and when I went back to my hotel room and looked at all the loot I’d received, I could practically hear the sound of angels singing as I laid eyes on this salve. It immediately soothed my aching feet and left them soft and ready for the next day of Expo. I heart you, JR Watkins!

Gorgeous finds: I’m loving the samples of the dry skin lotion from Natralia (natralia.com) and I can’t wait to use some of the beauty supplements from Reserveage (reserveage.com)—especially the Collagen Booster and Beautiful Legs formulas.
On my mind: The Essentials For An Extraordinary Life breakfast with Nordic Naturals (nordicnaturals.com) and Healthy Child Healthy World (healthychild.org) was truly inspiring—and I’ve been taking my Ultimate Omega Xtra supplements religiously ever since (my son loves the Nordic Berries, too!).
Delicious discoveries: I still can’t get over how the soup-and-wrap combos from Cedar Lane Foods (cedarlanefoods.com) tasted just like homemade (no way that was a frozen meal) and, as with the last Expo, I couldn’t get enough of the chocolate Pirate’s Booty (piratesbooty.com).

As editor of our annual Good Food Awards (“THE GOODIES”), I spent most of my time at Expo searching out (and tasting, and re-tasting...) the best new natural foodstuffs. Some real standouts:
TaDah!’s frozen-fusion meals wrap moist falafel patties in whole wheat tortillas. When you purchase, a portion of proceeds go to DC-area NGOs.
Hilary’s Eat Well makes THE most delicious veggie burgers I’ve ever tasted (and I’ve tasted a lot). Their original is amazing, but the Spicy Adzuki Bean burger is even better.
Food For Lovers debuted the world’s first vegan queso, which uses nutritional yeast for the (very convincing) cheesy flavor.
Upton’s Naturals’ “faux” seitan meats come four ways: traditional, ground, Italian (my favorite) and chorizo.
Way Better’s chips use sprouted ingredients for extra richness in flavor and extra nutrients in your belly.
Harmless Harvest is trying to promote the world’s first raw and organic coconut water without spending ANY money on advertising or PR, which instantly endears me to them. (Also their Expo reps were very handsome, which I’m sure helps their cause.)
This year’s GOODIES should be the most diverse and delicious yet!

Beauty treasures: I will no longer skip hand cream in my beauty routine, thanks to Love & Toast Pomme Poivre Handcreme (loveandtoast.com), which has the lightest, most refreshing scent! Also, Pacifica’s Coconut Crushed Pearl Bronzing Body Butter gave my New York skin the perfect California glow it needed. (I was also thrilled to hear that the company donates to the Ocean’s Future Society (oceanfutures.org).
Good eats (and drinks!): When I was done testing out every beauty product in sight, I indulged in some healthy treats. My favorites were Peanut Butter & Co.’s phenomenal Cinnamon Raisin Swirl peanut butter (ilovepeanutbutter.com) and BLK Water (blkbeverages.com), which is water infused with electrolytes, antioxidants and fulvic acid that turns the water black. (The fact that it’s black might frighten some—but I’m all for a little extra boost of antioxidants and electrolytes, especially while traveling!)
