Spirit Junkie by Gabrielle Bernstein
This guide is a makeover for your soul
Anyone who refers to herself as “the happiest person she knows” has our attention. After all, that is saying a lot these days, in a world where dissatisfaction is most people’s set point, and we’re taught that a bad mood can be lifted with retail therapy instead of, say, volunteering at your local animal shelter. Gabrielle Bernstein's Spirit Junkie is here to teach us about self-love and happiness. Gabrielle experienced a whirlwind of bad relationships, drug abuse and shopping addiction before finally hitting rock bottom and realizing that she needed to focus on her self to find true happiness. After reading about her past and her spiritual journey, I reflected on some comments made by friends and myself over the past week: “If I just get that fur vest everything will be so great!” or “This apartment sucks, I can’t wait to move.” Maybe we can blame the fur vest comment on the fact that it’s currently New York Fashion Week, and the apartment comment on the fact that New York apartments are small cubicles, but it is also a sign of looking outward for happiness instead of focusing on you—the inner you. Whether you’ feel like you need a serious spiritual intervention or just want to banish negative (but totally natural) thoughts like these, Gabrielle offers sage advice like practicing the F Word (forgiveness!) along with daily meditation.
