SMELL: Use common scents
Your sense of smell is part of your body’s limbic system, which also regulates memory, so fragrance is more intertwined with emotion than any other sense, says Alan R. Hirsch, M.D., F.A.C.P., board-certified neurologist, psychiatrist and founder of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago. “You not only experience the smell, but the emotion you experienced along with it in the past,” Hirsch explains. Studies also link scents to specific moods and mental states. For instance, people exposed to jasmine proved more alert than those who didn’t sniff the scent. And the smells of lavender and grass are thought to reduce anxiety.
