5 Ways to Green Your Beauty Routine
Earth Day is a time to reflect on the ways we can be an active part of keeping our planet healthy. More often than not, it’s the small changes that make the biggest difference.
It’s no secret that we’re living in an increasingly toxic world—and researchers are learning more every day about what they refer to as our toxic “body burden” or “pollution in people.” Although companies and policymakers are working to better regulate or even eradicate toxins in consumer products, the dangers continue to lurk in a shocking number of places. “People are exposed to several hundred chemicals that we know of on a regular basis and studies show that many of them have adverse health effects in people,” says Ted Schettler, M.D., M.P.H., California-based science director for the Science and Environmental Health Network (sehn.org). Scary as that sounds, there’s a lot you can do to lower your own body burden.
Greening your skin care routine doesn’t mean compromising on results. Here are a few tips to help you get started:
1. Skip the SLS Those foaming suds we love are often due to the sodium lauryl sulfate. But they end up in our oceans and not only present harm to aquatic wildlife, but take too many years to biodegrade. Plus, repeated exposure is proven to have serious effects on our health and may even be linked to cancer. Products without SLS get you just as squeaky clean.
