10 Must Have Beauty Products
A polyphenol found in grape skin, seeds and stems, resveratrol increases cellular activity and longevity and is touted as a powerful anti-aging tool. Resveratrol can be taken orally in a supplement. Try: Reserveage Organics Resveratrol 500 mg ($76; reserveage.com). It can also be applied topically in the form of face creams. Try: Caudalíe Vinexpert Riche Radiance Day Cream SPF 10 ($68; caudalie-usa.com).
7. Face brighteners
The light-reflecting properties of skin diminish as you age, resulting in a dull complexion. To bring back that healthy glow, use makeup that adds light-reflective qualities and brightens your face instantly. Help disguise and repair fine lines and wrinkles with peptides and marine collagen. Try: Smashbox Photo Op Eye Brightener ($18; smashbox.com) [shown]. Hide shadows and decrease the appearance of wrinkles with moisturizing ceramides and peptides. Try: Per-fekt Eye Perfection Gel ($45; sephora.com). Use light-diffusing mineral pigments to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Try: Laura Geller Barely There Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 ($30; laurageller.com).
Sun exposure is the single biggest cause of skin damage. "Long-term, chronic exposure to ultraviolet rays breaks down collagen and elastin, turning the skin from soft and supple to leathery," says Parikh. "The sun also zaps the skin's ability to retain moisture." To keep wrinkles at bay, use an SPF 30 or higher every day, year-round, and make sure it's a full-spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Try: Aveeno Positively Ageless Daily Moisturizer SPF 42 ($20; drugstore.com).
9. Skin lighteners
Age spots result from melanin concentration brought on by years of sun exposure; skin lighteners or bleaches help break up melanin clumps and inhibit their formation. "Hydroquinone is the traditional prescription medical treatment for hyperpigmentation, and it's the most effective," says Parikh. "But new natural ingredients such as licorice extract and kojic acid can be very effective," he says. If you have sensitive skin that is easily irritated and prefer gentler ingredients, look for natural lighteners that contain kojic acid, beta-carotene or licorice extract. Try: Borba Age Defying Advanced Recovery Creme ($60; borba.com).
Big, open eyes and an engaging smile may be the best age-busters of all. To make even the most tired eyes look more awake, line your top lashes and outside corners of your bottom lashes with a good eyeliner. Rich color pigments make eyes sparkle by counteracting red tones. Try: bareMinerals Big & Bright Eyeliner ($14; bareescentuals.com) [shown]. As for your pearly whites? Teeth actually appear whiter when you use a lip gloss with a subtle blue tint. Try: Benefit California Kissin' ($18; benefitcosmetics.com). And in the end, says Dattner, a smile is the ultimate anti-aging strategy and it doesn't cost a thing: "Find happiness and satisfaction in your life and your inner beauty will always come out."
